Defensive tackle and fullback on Verot's first football team in 1966. First Team All-Southwest Florida and First Team All-State selection in 1967. Began teaching and coaching at Verot in 1972 and has been a head or assistant coach for 23 years. Assistant coach in 1974 of the only undefeated Verot Varsity Football Team in school history. Instrumental in founding the Freshmen Football Program in 1994. Varsity baseball head coach for three years and JV head coach for two years. Athletic Director from 1979-1989. Has taught and coached more than 3,000 students in a distinguished career spanning more than three decades.

One of Bishop Verot High School's most generous supporters and benefactors for twenty years. Husband of Cookie Swanson and father of four children: Emily, Shelley, Duane Jr. and Mark. His contributions, both financially and through hours of sweat and hard work, have resulted in the finest athletic facilities in Southwest Florida. His continued commitment to Verot has provided for the needs of students many years after his own children graduated. His generosity has set a standard for new generations of Verot parents to follow and his loyalty exemplifies the Verot Spirit.

Three-Year Varsity Letter winner in volleyball. Named the Viking's Most Valuable Player in 1983 and 1984. Named as a Coral Coast Conference First Team selection in 1983 and 1984. Named First Team FACA and First Team All-State 1984. Honored as the News-Press Female Athlete of the Year in 1984-1985. At a time when women's sports were recently established and seeking respect, she pioneered a new era for young women at Verot by gaining admiration as an athlete and a fierce competitor. A standout player and captain of the first team in Bishop Verot history to win a State Championship in 1984.

Two-Time Class 1A All-State First Team selection. Two-Time Class 1A All-Regional Team Player. Two-Time All-Southwest Florida First Team Player. Leading rusher and co-leader with most touchdowns in Southwest Florida in 1973. Honored as News-Press Football Player of the Year in 1974. Held school records for touchdowns, rushing yards and points scored for almost twenty years.

Four-Year Varsity Letter winner in baseball. Played shortstop and was captain of the State Championship Baseball Team in 1994. First Team All-Southwest Florida and First Team All-State selection in 1994. Named to Mizuno USA Pre-Season All American Team, Team One All-American Team and USA TODAY All-American Honorable Mention in 1994. Drafted in the 10th round by the N.Y. Mets. Attended Mississippi State University and homered in College World Series. Hit .345 with 39 HR and 135 RBI to win Texas League Triple Crown and earn Minor League Player of the Year in 1999. Played in the Major Leagues for four seasons.

Four-Year Varsity Letter winner in soccer, two-year varsity letter winner in cross country and track. 1997-98, as a freshman, named team MVP, and First Team All-Area in cross country. In track, qualified for State Meet in the 1600 and the 4x800. Named Second Team All-Area. In soccer, named First Team All-Area and was the leading scorer in Lee County. 1998-99, named First Team All-Area in cross country. In track, became a state qualifier on the 4x800 relay team. Named Second Team All-Area. In soccer, led the team in scoring, and was named First Team All-Area. In 1999-2000, her Junior year, due to a severe back injury, was unable to participate in athletics. Returned 2000-01, named Soccer Captain and led the Lady Vikings in scoring with 41 goals, including 8 in the State Playoffs, and 14 assists for the season. Led the team to the State Final Four. Named MVP of the North-South All-Star Game, scoring 3 goals. Named First Team All-Area.

Rare three sport athlete. Four-Year varsity letter winner in football and basketball. Three-Year varsity letter winner in baseball. Played during an era where statistics were randomly accounted for. In football, "played both sides of the ball," excelling at quarterback. In 1968, winner of the Golden Helmet Award, highest honor given to a football player. In 1970 led the Vikings to their best ever football season record up to that time, 7-3. Was instrumental in leading the team, breaking several school records. During senior year, was the starting guard on Verot's first district championship basketball team. Recognized by teammates and opponents for his consummate passion for competition and Viking spirit, regardless of the sport. Highly regarded for his leadership, on and off the court, as well as his fiery Irish enthusiasm. Well-chosen senior yearbook description reads: "Mr. Viking, Mr. America and Mr. Verot."

Four-Year Varsity Letter winner in track, three-year varsity letter winner in cross country. In 1986, first and only female cross country runner at Verot and first track athlete to qualify for state. Cross Country ~ placed at the state meet in 1986 and 1987 and was ranked #6 in class 2A as a senior. Placed first in the Coral Coast Conference Championship as a freshman in 1987 and was undefeated in dual and tri-meets. Track ~ 1986 Coral Coast Conference Champion in mile and two mile. In 1987 as a sophomore, won the half mile, mile and two mile events in the Coral Coast Conference Championships. Qualified for state, earning 6th place. At graduation, held school records in four individual track events and two relay events. For four consecutive years was the season point leader for all track athletes. At induction, still remains the record holder in the mile and 3200 meter. Described by fellow Hall of Fame Member and legendary Coach, Father John Beattie, as "All Verot."

Founding member of Bishop Verot's first boys' soccer team. It was primarily through his efforts that the team was formed. First team captain. Starter on the varsity team from 1985-1987. Named to the Josten's Invitational Christmas All-Tournament Team. All Southwest Florida High School Soccer First Team selection. Played at a time when soccer was in the very early stages of development. Went on to play at the University of South Florida, 1987-1991, earning All-Conference honors three of his four collegiate years. Played professionally 1991-1996. An outstanding young man in all respects, a superb athlete and competitor, highly respected by teammates and opponents, setting standards for work ethic, dedication and performance.

State qualifier in Long Jump and 4x100 relay. 2nd in points on team as a sophomore. Earned Viking Pride Award. 1997-1998: State qualifier High Jump & 220. State Champion in High Jump with school record 5'2". Led team in points with 315.25. Earned MVP Award. Awarded the Fort Myers Sportsman Club Award. 1998-1999: State qualifier in High Jump. Remained High Jump Record Holder. Placed 2nd on team for points earned with 206. Was named Co-MVP. Track Team won four consecutive District Championships during her time on varsity.

Only Verot football player to be named to an All-State team three years in a row - First Team All-State as linebacker his junior and senior years: Honorable Mention All-State sophomore year as a linebacker. Named to the News-Press All-Southwest Florida 2nd Team, Defense, sophomore year. News-Press All-Southwest Florida 1st Team, Defense, junior and senior years. Played both sides of the ball junior and senior years while leading team in tackles with 135 during junior year. Finished his high school career with a school record 370 tackles. Offensively, he had a career total of 18 touchdowns and rushed for 1526 yards. Football team was class 2A State Runner-up his junior year, Final Four his senior year. Baseball team won 3 District Championship titles during his high school career. Named MVP and broke school stolen base record his junior year.

A true Verot legend that has contributed countless volunteer hours in support of Bishop Verot and Viking athletics. Began announcing junior varsity football games in 1984, later moving on to varsity football and basketball. Instrumental in re-energizing the Athletic Boosters. Elected Booster President in 1988, an office he holds to this day. His tireless leadership efforts have helped the Booster Club raise over one million dollars to fund athletic programs and help Bishop Verot build the Nevins Gymnasium and Santini Center. Universally acclaimed as running the finest concession stand in Southwest Florida. Bishop Verot's most valued, selfless, and reliable volunteer for more than twenty years.

Founded girls Verot track program in 1988 and girls cross country team in 1991. Head coach of girls track for sixteen years and head coach of girls cross country team for the past fifteen years. Coached five girls teams to district titles and over eighty girls to state finals in track, including three state champions. Guided three cross country teams to district championships and eleven cross country teams to state final appearances. Has served as chaplain to the Viking Football Team since 1986. Named Sportsman Club of Southwest Florida Coach of the Year in 1999. Exemplar of the "Non Excidet" spirit.

High school coach for over thirty-five years, including twenty-one years as track and boys cross country coach at Bishop Verot since 1986. Led boys track to four district titles and boys cross country to five district titles. Coached over sixty track athletes that qualified for the state finals in distance and pole vault events. Twelve boys cross country teams have made state appearances under his guidance. Coached four cross country state champions including Verot's first male state qualifier. Named Sportsman Club of Southwest Florida Coach of the Year in 1999. Named a charter member of the Delaware Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1988.

Decorated hero of World War II. On April 26, 1945 at age 19, an exploding German shell claimed his legs but did not stop him from establishing a communications post and relaying orders. This "Non Excidet" spirit and energy were shared generously with family and friends after the war. An inspiration and true Viking pioneer during the formative years of Bishop Verot High School. A driving force that started the athletic program and oversaw the creation of original athletic facilities enjoyed by generations of Verot athletes. Instrumental in forming the Athletic Booster Club, serving as the first president 1965-1967 and 1973-1974. Named "Lifetime Member" in 1972. Husband of Maggie and father of four sons, all Verot graduates: Daniel, John, Tim and David.

Four-Year varsity letter winner in track and soccer; three-year winner in cross country. In 1995-1996, as a freshman, named Cross Country Rookie of the Year and received Coach's Award in track. In 1996-1997, named Defensive Player of the Year in soccer and received 110% Award in cross country. In track, awarded the 110% Award, was a state qualifier in the 4x400 and 4x800 relays. Teams set school records in both events. In 1997-1998, was Defensive Player of the Year in soccer. In track, again earned 110% Award, was a state qualifier in the pole vault, 330 intermediate hurdles and 4x400. Reset school records in 4x400 and 4x800 relays (since broken). Team set standing school record in the 4x1600 relay. In 1998-1999, named captain of the varsity soccer team. Led track team in points, scoring 285.75. Was a state qualifier in Pole vault, 330 intermediate hurdles and 4x400. State Champion in the pole vault at 10'6" which remains a school record. Named First Team All-State.

Team physician since 1985. Besides acting in that particular role, his leadership has led to a number of programs which have assisted all Verot athletes for nearly thirty years. Initiated the Bishop Verot Pre-Participation Physicals, which has served all student/athletes on-sight. Coordinated efforts with other local physicians and specialists which has enabled the school to offer this on-going commitment. Developed a series directed at reducing female ACL injuries through education and specific conditioning training. Initiated the Athletic Trainer Program, partnering with Florida Gulf Coast University, enabling constant and professional care for all student-athletes at all home contests. While understanding the student-athlete mentality, he has continually placed the student-athletes health first and foremost. Has donated many hours of personal time for the betterment of the Bishop Verot Athletic Program and can often be found roaming the sidelines at games, home and away.

Three-Year varsity letter winner in track and basketball. Four-year varsity letter winner in football. During his four years with varsity football, team record was 28-11. In 1983, ran for single-game school record 343 rushing yards. During the same year, the football team set a former state record in regular-season total offense with 4,574 yards. In 1984, rushed for single-game 302 yards, third most in school history. Ranks third in single-season rushing with 1,775 yards and 14 touchdowns during the 1984 season. Ranks third in school history in career rushing with 3,512 yards and 28 touchdowns. During the 1982 and 1983 varsity football seasons, led Coach Dick Pugh's Verot wishbone attack, which holds the top 5 single-game total offensive records. In 1985, was the second leading scorer in track. Was part of three relay teams which set former school records in 4x400, 4x800 and mile. Holds current school record in triple jump at 43'7". Awarded Varsity Football's Most Outstanding Back and Most Valuable Player. Named a member of the All-Southwest Florida High School Football Team. Chosen News-Press Athlete of the Year in 1984-1985.

Three-year varsity letter winner in track. 1996, as a freshman, qualified for State and finished 8th in Pole Vault. In 1997, sophomore year, set school record in the Pole Vault - 13'6". Qualified for State in the High Hurdles, Triple Jump and Pole Vault, where he finished in 2nd place. Named the team MVP. Suffered a near career ending injury in spring football and was unable to compete in any sports his junior year. Returned in 1999, and set a new Pole Vault school record at 14'0". Was a member of the 480 Shuttle Hurdle relay team which at that time, set the school record at :65.95. Scored 350 points for the season. Qualified for the State Meet in three events. State Champion in Pole Vault, State Runner-Up in 100M High Hurdles. Scored 22 points at State Meet. Named First Team All-Area and First Team All-State Class 3A. Named the MVP at the Florida Junior Olympics, specializing in the Decathlon. Named Athlete of the Year by the Sportsmen Club of Southwest Florida.

One of the first exceptional three-sport female athletes at Bishop Verot. Four-year varsity letter winner in basketball and softball; three-year winner in volleyball. Co-captain of 1989 district-winning softball team. Co-captain of volleyball, softball and basketball teams 1990. MVP of the S.W. Florida All-Star Basketball game 1990. First Team All-Southwest Florida in basketball 1990 and softball 1989 and 1990. Earned All-State honors in softball 1990 while leading the team in all hitting categories including .517 batting average. Selected for the F.A.C.A. North-South Florida All-Star Team 1990. Her unselfish involvement, commitment and leadership provided inspiration for other female athletes while helping to establish the successful girls athletic programs currently enjoyed at Bishop Verot.

Four-Year varsity letter winner in volleyball and softball, and three-time Player of the Week for the Cape Coral Breeze & Fort Myers News-Press. In 1993-1994, as a freshman, named Team MVP in softball. Started as setter for varsity volleyball team. As a sophomore in softball, named Team MVP, All Southwest Florida, 1st Team All-State, and F.A.C.A. 3A Player of the Year. As a junior in 1995-1996, named 3rd Team All-State in softball; named All-State Honorable Mention & F.A.C.A. 3A Player of the Year, while serving as co-captain in volleyball. As a senior in 1996-1997, named captain & received the 110% Award in volleyball. At the conclusion of her BVHS career, held 3 school record in volleyball: most assist per match (44 - record never broken - old match format), most set assists per season (458), and most service points per game (154).

First individual to be inducted into the Bishop Verot Athletic Hall of Fame as both a player and coach. Four-year varsity letter winner in baseball, three years in basketball, one year in football. In 1975-1976, as a sophomore, named News-Press 1st Team All-Southwest Florida in baseball. As a junior in 1976-1977, named 2nd Team All-Southwest Florida and Cape Coral Breeze All Area 1st Team in basketball. Named MVP of the varsity basketball team. 1st Team All-Southwest Florida in baseball. In 1978-1979, senior year, was named MVP of both varsity basketball and baseball teams. Cape Coral Breeze All Area 1st Team in basketball; 2nd Team All Southwest Florida Honors in football and basketball; First basketball player at Verot to score over 1000 points. 1st Team All-Southwest Florida in baseball. Head varsity baseball coach at Bishop Verot from 1999-2011. During his tenure, teams made 12 regional appearances in 13 years; winners of 9 District Championships. In 2000, baseball team was Florida 3A State Runnier-Up, Florida State Champions in 2011. Ten-time F.A.C.A. District Coach of the Year. Three-time Southwest Florida Baseball Coach of the Year. Florida Coach of the Year 2011. Coaching record: 261 wins, 156 losses - .626 winning percentage.

Mr. Kiesel was one of the early Bishop Verot Booster Club volunteers and pioneers who contributed countless hours to the development of the athletic program. Together with current Hall of Fame members, Duane Swanson, Carl Kistel and Don Overholser, Mr. Kiesel devoted his time and energies into developing our athletic facilities. Many days he could be found around school raking the baseball infield, building the press box, installing sprinkler systems and lighting. No task was too large or too small. He was instrumental in reestablishing the Booster Club in 1984 after it had disbanded several years earlier. Today the Booster Club is providing funding for over 21 high school sports. This would not have been possible without people like Mr. Kiesel and his wife, Joan, also sent all six of their children through Bishop Verot: George, Class of '72; Douglass, Class of '74; Carolyn, Class of '75; Carl, Class of '78; Sharon Class of '80; and Kurt, Class of '89.

First athletic director in the school's history. Began working at Verot in 1965 with no athletic facilities available. Served not only as athletic director, but also football, basketball and baseball coach, field maintenance director, P.E., math and science teacher, and transportation director. His leadership led to the planning and construction of the football field and development of Verot's first football team. Held basketball practice on the area which is presently the senior parking lot. Baseball teams practiced and played on the same field used today. Instrumental in establishing the foundation for the initial development of the facilities and athletic program now enjoyed by our Verot community. Retired in 1975.

Four-Year varsity letter winner in basketball & three-year varsity letter winner in softball. 1999-2000, New Press First Team All-Area in softball as a pitcher. Junior year 2000-2001, was News Press All-Area First Team in basketball. F.A.C.A. District 16 Class 3A Basketball Player of the Year. Named Class 3A First Team All-State in softball. As a senior in 2001-2002, earned First Team All-State honors in basketball, leading team to first ever State Final game. Named to Fort Myers News Press All-Area Basketball First Team and Player of the Year. Named Cape Coral Breeze Female Athlete of the Year in both basketball and softball. F.A.C.A. District 16 Class 3A Basketball Player of the Year. Selected for the Florida Athletic Coaches Association All-State Class 3A First Team. Ended her career with 1828 points and 1042 rebounds, both current school records, 301 assists and 306 steals. Holds school records for most points scored in a single game (35) and most rebounds in a single game (22), as well as single season scoring record with 538 points. Finished her high school career with a 4.36 cumulative grade point average.

Mrs. Garratt was in charge of the concession stands when her son, Robert Garratt, a '95 graduate and a dedicated member of our Cross Country and Track Programs attended Verot. Her gregarious spirit, kindness and generosity, endeared her to many, she was, and still is, a friend to all of us. To this day, Mrs. Garratt continues to volunteer in Donny O's Cafe. In April 2007, the Albert M. Garratt Scholarship was established by Mrs. Garratt and her family in honor of her husband and Robert's father. The scholarship is awarded annually to one male and one female BVHS senior cross country runner who attends either a two year or four year college. Her family continues to donate food from their Subway shops for cross country and track events. Mrs. Garratt's contributions and continued volunteerism at our school over the span of twenty years epitomizes the quintessential Bishop Verot Spirit!

Mr. Mitchell's association with Bishop Verot began when his first of two sons, Malcolm, became a student at Verot in 1995, followed by Kyle in 1997. Mr. Mitchell has remained a dedicated and ever-present volunteer and contributor to our school community to this day, over twenty years later. From driving BV busses, flipping burgers in our concession stands, helping out at our annual golf tournaments benefitting Verot athletes. We are grateful he consistently participates as an external stakeholder on various school committees, his input, perspectives and willingness to be a part of our amazing "family" in whatever manner necessary to "help the school" epitomizes the spirit upon which our school was founded and continues to thrive. Mr. Mitchell's unselfish allegiance and contributions to our school are appreciated beyond words.

First Team All-State, All-District and All Area as wide receiver. PrepStar All-Region selection. Ranked second in state in receiving yardage (1,173). Set nine school records senior year: single-game receptions (14), single-game receiving yards (260), single-game TD receptions (4), single-season receptions (54), single-season receiving yards (1,173), single-season TD receptions (15), career receptions (114), career receiving yardage (2,322), and career TD receptions (26). Also played safety and punter. Prep Athlete of the Week by Cape Coral Breeze and Fort Myers News-Press. Second Team All-Area as wide receiver junior year. Team Captain. Played in John Carrigan Rotary South All-Star Classic. Track team MVP as a junior, placed 11th in State 300 meter hurdles, First Team All-Area. In Soccer: All-Area Second Team as a goalie junior year. Starting goalie for 2004 State Runner-up. First Team All-Area and All-State Senior Year. Played football at Northwestern University.

Four-year varsity letterwinner in volleyball; two years in basketball. Played libero for some of Verot's best-ever volleyball teams. Recorded more than 1,000 digs during her high school career. Helped Verot to four district titles and two straight appearances in regional finals. Team won 45 consecutive regular season matches during her career. Two-time News Press First Team All-Area selection. Named an Honorable Mention All-American by Under Armour following senior season, and was named one of top 100 players in the nation by American Volleyball Coaches Association. Also played two years of varsity basketball, helping Vikings to a playoff berth as a junior. Played college volleyball at Florida State, where she set a school record with 2,123 digs. Was a three-year captain, two-time All-ACC selection, and 2014 All-American with the Seminoles. Starting libero on 2011 Florida State team that advanced to national semifinals for first time in school history.

Four-year varsity letter winner in swimming. One of the most prolific swimmers in Lee County history. Won three state championships during high school career. Won 500 yard freestyle in 2007 and two titles - 200 yard and 500 yard freestyles - in 2009. Ranked first in the nation in 500 yard freestyle in 2009. Graduated from Verot holding nine school records. Two-time News-Press Swimmer of the Year. Four-time News-Press All-Area selection. 10-time high school All-America selection. Swam collegiately at North Carolina. Won NCAA national championship in 1650 yard freestyle in 2012. Also earned First Team All-American, ACC Swimmer of the Year, and All-ACC honors during college career. Set NCAA records in several events. Ranked as high as eighth in the world in 800 meter freestyle ... Represented Team USA at three World University Games in 2011, 2013, and 2015.

Four-year varsity letter winner in football; three years in basketball. Left Bishop Verot as the leading passer in Lee County history. During Bishop Verot career, passed for 6,243 yards and 60 touchdowns, both of which were Lee County records. Held essentially every Bishop Verot passing record at graduation. Led Vikings to playoff berths in 2001 and 2002. 2002 News-Press Offensive Player of the Year and Honorable Mention All-State selection. Three-time News-Press All-Area selection. Also played X years of varsity basketball, and helped Vikings to 22-4 record as a senior. Played college football at East Carolina and Guilford. In four seasons at Guilford, set 19 NCAA Division III passing record. Graduated as leading passer in NCAA Division III history with 13,605 passing yards. Inducted in Guilford Athletics Hall of Fame in 2023. Returned to Bishop Verot after college as a coach for Verot football program.

Three-year varsity letter winner in basketball. Became first Bishop Verot player to score more than 1500 points in high school career. Averaged more than 20 points per game in three varsity seasons. Left Bishop Verot as program's all-time leader in points and assists. Became first Bishop Verot player to score 600 points in a season in 2004-05. Scored 30 or more points in a game eight times, a school record at graduation. Twice selected as News-Press Player of the Year and First Team All-State. 2006 Southwest Florida Mr. Basketball. Named to City of Palms All-Tournament Team in 2004. Led Bishop Verot to two consecutive district championships, including Sweet 16 in 2005 and Elite Eight in 2006. Basketball program went 66-17 during three varsity seasons. Played college basketball at Michigan and FGCU before playing professional basketball in Turkey, Thailand, and Canada.

Three-year varsity letter winner in baseball. Became second Bishop Verot graduate to play Major League Baseball. At Bishop Verot, was named First Team All-State in Class 3A in 2003. Batted .460 with 30 runs batted in during senior season, leading Vikings to district championship and regional final appearance. Two-time News-Press All-Area selection. Played college baseball at Stetson University, earning Conference Freshman of the Year, First Team All-Conference, and Third Team All-American honors. Inducted in Stetson Athletics Hall of Fame in 2014. Drafted by Houston Astros in fourth round of 2006 MLB Draft. Made MLB debut for Houston in 2009. Played eight seasons in Major League Baseball with Astros, Diamondbacks, Braves, Indians, and Marlins. Ranked second in National League in batting average with Atlanta Braves in 2013. Remained in Major League Baseball after retirement as a coach.

Was the subject of an FHSAA executive decision to reclassify from 1A to 2A after the fifth week of the season, ultimately eliminating the team from State Playoffs for scheduling reasons. Were 7-0 and ranked #2 in class 1A at the time of reclassification. Ranked #3 in 2A afterwards. Strongly considered as State Champion contenders in either class should they have been able to participate in the playoffs.

During this season, they were ranked #1 in the state while becoming district, regional, and sectional champs. Ranked in the State Top Four the entire season. Scored 337 points to their opponent's 81 points, including 3 shutouts and holding 7 opponents to 7 points or less. Their only two losses were by 2 and 3 points. won the longest overtime game in state history, four overtimes, defeating the Frostproof 34-33 in the Regional Final. Ended the season with a record of 11-2. First football team in Lee County to play in a Florida State Final game.
